Lovely and Typical Weekend

Saturday evening, we celebrated the 90th birthday of a dear friend at the Coast Guard House in Narragansett, Rhode Island.  It was our first time to be there and we had a really lovely evening.  Our birthday girl is sharp as a tack and get’s around really great, but she can’t see too well anymore.  She loves the ocean, so her children planned a party at this iconic restaurant.  The ocean was rough, and the tides were high.  Some waves splashed right up on the windows of the restaurant!  It was wonderful for our friend – she could see the waves as they struck the window!  She loved it.  We all agreed it was her birthday present from God.  The surfers down below seemed to appreciate the gift, too!

The ladies at the party were all given small bouquets of daffodils handpicked in Ireland.  There were instructions regarding how to take care of them when we returned home, but I was a bit skeptical as my daffodils were quite wilted by the end of the evening.  However, I followed instructions, and was rewarded with a beautiful spring greeting next morning!  I actually laughed out loud when I entered the kitchen and saw these pretty things on my table!

Our dining room is usually always a sewing/craft/catch-all room that makes a tiny house like ours work.  On occasion, I put all those things away and clean it up for a dinner party.  I love the way it looks and vow to keep it that way; that is until the next time I want to get out the sewing machine and ironing board and get to work on the next block of the month for my quilt guild!  Anyway, this weekend was one of those weekends – and the room is simply dreamy with those daffodils gracing the table.

Our youngest daughter is married to a young man from Haiti and they have two little boys.  Sunday evening, we invited them over as well two friends from church, a couple we have known for a long time; he is a native of Haiti and she is from the US, like our daughter.  Our friends brought a Haitian dish to share and I made my old standby lasagna (along with a traditional Texas chocolate sheet cake) and what a wonderful evening we had!  So much fun and laughter!  And quite a bit of Haitian Creole spoken at our table!   These two young couples made plans to get together again and bigger plans to help the Haitian community in our state – can’t wait to see what comes of this.
Thanks for reading my first blog post.  We are empty nesters, grandparents of seven great kids.  I am still working full time as a legal assistant for a downtown law firm, but my heart is really in so many other places – my kids and grandkids, my church and Sunday school, my 4-H Club, Mayan Families, my quilting guilds and camping with my husband, just to name a few!  I guess I kind of live for weekends, but you never know when something sweet, pretty or interesting might catch my attention – stay tuned!
